Reporting to the Executive Director, the Controller fulfills this mission by overseeing all finance, accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board and will work closely with the senior leadership team.


The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $2.9 million, establishing and executing an integrated strategy for the accounting operations of the organization, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate standards and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures
  • Coordinate all audit activity
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep Executive Director abreast of S&L’s financial status
  • Assist S&L’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
  • Support the Executive Director in engaging the board around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government corporate, and foundation grants
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the senior leadership; continuously collaborate with senior leadership to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines


Position Qualifications

  • Alignment with the Salt & Light’s “Statement of Beliefs”, and commitment to supporting Salt & Light’s mission and vision
  • Possession of extremely strong relational skills – ability to easily engage with a diverse group of participants, volunteers, and staff
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to think strategically across multiple priorities and initiatives
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications such as Microsoft suite and QuickBooks
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration or equivalent business experience
  • Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a working knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software package


Position Type & Expected Hours of Work

  • Full Time, Salary
  • Hours as determined, typically Monday – Friday between 9am and 5pm

Work Environment

This is an administrative role operating in a typical office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, etc.
